Elevating The Consciousness

The Baptism of Jesus
Matthew 3:13 - Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. 14: but John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
Matthew 3:15 Jesus said, "Let it be so now, it is proper for s to do this to fulfill all righteousness.  Then John consented.
. The prophecy that was fulfilled is this, v. 14–16. It is quoted from Isa. 9:1, 2, but with some variation. The prophet in that place is foretelling a greater darkness of affliction to befal the contemners of Immanuel, than befel the countries there mentioned, either in their first captivity under Benhadad, which was but light (1 Ki. 15:20), or in their second captivity under the Assyrian, which was much heavier, 2 Ki. 15:29. The punishment of the Jewish nation for rejecting the gospel should be sorer than either (see Isa. 8:21, 22); for those captivated places had some reviving in their bondage, and saw a great light again, ch. 9:2. This is Isaiah’s sense; but the Scripture has many fulfillings; and the evangelist here takes only the latter clause, which speaks of the return of the light of liberty and prosperity to those countries that had been in the darkness of captivity, and applies it to the appearing of the gospel among them.

4:18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.4:19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
What Jesus said about Fasting
The Gospel of Matthew shows that Jesus “fasted forty days and forty nights” (Matthew 4:21). The Gospel of Luke adds the detail that “in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered” (Luke 4:2). Since Jesus fasted, his true followers will also fast, if they indeed follow his teachings.
He said, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31).
People had complained to Jesus saying, “Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?” (Luke 5:33). But Jesus replied that as long as he is with them his disciples should not fast, but after he is taken away then “they will fast in those days” (Luke 5:35).
This is why Jesus also gave them instructions on how to fast for the sake of God (Matthew 6:16-18). If they were never to fast, such instructions would be pointless. The Bible shows that the disciples were fasting afterwards: “they had fasted and prayed” (Acts 13:3), and again they had “prayed with fasting” (Acts 14:23).
The Bible mentions fasting as one of the observances of a minister of God (2 Corinthians 6:5), and “fastings often” as a proof of the worth of a disciple of Jesus.
Luke 5:33 quoted above reveals that
(a) fasting means abstinence from eating and drinking, and,
(b) that although the disciples were not to fast until after Jesus was taken away, Jesus himself continued to fast, otherwise the complaint would have been against him also.
It is clear that the Jewish Rabbis were fasting (Matthew 9:14, and Mark 2:18). And Jesus too was called a Rabbi (see John 1:38; 3:2; 6:25 and Matthew 23:8). So he too must have been fasting.
The disciples were unable to drive out a demon from a boy, but Jesus drove it out. When the disciples asked how he did it, he said that this kind can be driven out only “by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29). This shows that because the disciples were not fasting they could not drive out the demon, and, that Jesus could drive it out because he was fasting.
Some copyists attempted to change this verse by leaving out the words ‘and fasting’. This is how, for example, the Revised Standard Version reads. But this reading gives the passage an impossible meaning that Jesus’s disciples were not praying either. This is perhaps why the Catholic Edition of the Revised Standard Version restores the words ‘and fasting’. The New Testament From the Ancient Eastern Text also includes the words ‘and fasting’ (Mark 9:29).
God rescued us from this uncertainty by revealing his final incorruptible message in which He instructs all able believers to fast for a month each year. Today Jesus' true followers are still fasting according to God's pure instructions.

Jesus Said "Be perfect." Who Says You Can't?

Mat.5:48 "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
Who commanded people to be perfect? Jesus said (Mat.5:48), "Be ye therefore perfect. . ."  In Joh.14:15 he states, "If ye love me, keep my commandments."
What is the standard of perfection? Mat.5:48, ". . .even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." That is, God Almighty. Also, Eph.4:13 shows we can all come to "a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ" (Col.2:9, Ph'p.2:5, Eph.3:19).
What kind of perfection is that? Spiritual perfection because (Joh.4:24) "God is a spirit."
Where is perfection? In the mind (1Co.1:10, Ph'p.3:15).
So the Bible speaks of a spiritual, mental perfection. From the Greek words that were translated to read "perfection," "perfect," etc., we can see that perfection refers to a completeness, a mental and moral perfection.
Who was made perfect?
Jesus (Heb.2:10; 5:9; Luk.13:32)
The apostles (Joh.17:23).
Just (righteous) men (Heb.12:23) under the new covenant (Heb.7:11,19; 10:1; 9:9). People of the early church (1Co.2:6, present tense; Col.4:12).
People have taught that Jesus was the only one that could be perfect, claiming that he was born perfect. "Made perfect" (Heb.5:9) does not mean born perfect because in Luk.13:32 he said (future tense) "I shall be perfected." Also, Heb.2:10 shows God would make Christ perfect through sufferings. 1Pt.5:10 states, ". . . after that ye have suffered awhile, make you perfect. . . " The process that Jesus went through to be made perfect is the same process we are to go through. We, too, must suffer awhile before we can become perfect. This shows a progressive work that anyone (including Jesus) goes through in order to be "made perfect." See also Heb.5:7-9.
Who taught perfection?
Jesus (Mat.5:48; Luk.8:14; 6:40; Mat.19:21).
Paul (Col.1:28; 2Co.13:9,11; Eph.4:13).
James (Jam.1:4; 3:2).
Peter (1Pt.5:10).
John (1Jo.4:17).
Writer of Hebrews (Heb.6:1), doctrine of perfection (not imperfection).
What tools can help us be perfect?
The voice gifts (Eph.4:8,11-13).
All scripture (2Ti.3:16,17).
The blood of the everlasting covenant (new testament) (Heb.13:20,21). Heb.10:29 shows that the blood of the covenant is the spirit of grace. Rom.6:14 says grace can help us befree from sin.
Patience (Jam.1:4).
Understanding (Mat.13:19,23; Luk.8:14).
What things can be perfected?
Faith (Jam.2:22, 1Th.3:10).
Work(s) (Heb.13:21, Jam.1:4, Rev.3:2).
Strength (2Co.12:9).
Praise (Mat.21:16).
Holiness (2Co.7:1).
Love (1Jo.2:5; 4:12,17,18)

Give enough that your heart is in the kingdom of God and not in this material world.
(Mat 6:19-21 NRSV) "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; {20} but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. {21} For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"So do not be troubling yourself about tomorrow. Tomorrow will have its own trouble. Today's trouble is enough for today."Matthew 6:34 Jesus said, "Do not let anything trouble your heart. You believe in God and you must believe in me also."
John 14:1 "The thief comes only to steal the sheep and to kill them and spoil them I have come so that people may live and that they may enjoy life to the full."
John 10:10 More from the Bible "Turn all your troubles over to Him (God) because he cares for you, and is watching over you."
1 Peter 5:7 Note: the word translated here 'turn' can mean 'throw'. You can throw your troubles away from you, onto God!
"Always be glad for what the Lord has done. I will say it again, be glad. Let everyone know that you think kindly of others before yourselves. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything. Talk to God about everything. Thank him for what you have. Ask Him for what you need. Then God will give you peace, a peace which is too wonderful to understand. That peace will keep your hearts and minds safe as you trust in Christ Jesus."
Matt 7:13 (KJV) Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: {strait: or, narrow} 14 Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
(Matthew 11: 28-30)
Come unto me,
all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give your rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me;
for I am meek and lowly in heart;
and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

(Matthew 12: 36, 37)

But I say unto you,
That every idle word that men shall speak,
they shall give an account thereof in the day of judgment.
For by thy words shalt thou be justified,
and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

(Mark 7:6-8)

(To the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law)
Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites
As it is written
this people honoureth me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me.
Howbeit in vain do they worship me,
teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
For laying aside the commandment of God
ye hold the tradition of men,
as the washing of pots and cups;
and many other such things ye do

(Mark 8: 36-38)

For what shall it profit a man,
if he shall gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul?
Or what shall a man give
in exchange for his own soul?
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me
and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation;
of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed,
when he cometh in the glory of his Father
with the holy angels.

(Mark 9:42)

And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones
that believe in me,
it is better for him that a millstone
were hanged about his neck
and he were cast into the sea.

(Mark 10:14-15)Suffer the little children to come unto me
and forbid them not
for of such is the kingdom of God.
Verily I say unto you,
Whosoever shall not receive
the kingdom of God as a little child,
He shall not enter in.
Some are called to give more, perhaps everything, if their possessions have such a stronghold on their lives that money means more than God.(Mat 19:21 NRSV) Jesus said to him, "If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."
Do not cheat God of what belongs to God.(Mat 22:21b NRSV) Then he said to them, "Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor's, and to God the things that are God's."
(Mark 12:17)Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's,
and to God the things that are God's.
. Giving out of our excess is not enough, no matter how great the amount is. Our giving should be enough to represent a genuine sacrifice and commitment to God.(Mark 12:41-44 NRSV) He sat down opposite the treasury, and watched the crowd putting money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. {42} A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which are worth a penny. {43} Then he called his disciples and said to them, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the treasury. {44} For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."
Our giving should create in us a generous spirit. We can only receive God's abundant grace to the extent that we have an abundant heart. We cannot expect to be tight with God if we are tight with our giving of self and possessions.(Luke 6:37-38 NRSV) "Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; {38} give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back."
The Son of man must suffer many things,
and be rejected of the elders
and chief priests and scribes,
and be slain
and be raised the third day.
(Luke 9:22)

"I am the door,
if anyone enters by me,
he will be saved."
John 10:9
Our heart must be in our giving. Giving to the Lord cannot be legislated. It is not enough to only give to fulfill a sense of duty.(Luke 11:42 NRSV) "But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and herbs of all kinds, and neglect justice and the love of God; it is these you ought to have practiced, without neglecting the others.

Also I say unto you,
Whosoever shall confess me before men,
him shall the Son of man confess
before the angels of God.
But he that denieth me before men
shall be denied before the angels of God.
(Luke 12:8-9)

Life is not about accumulating wealth. It is about having a wealth of the love of God in our hearts. We must give enough of our money to break the power of money to seduce us into thinking life is about possessions and not about our inner, spiritual lives. Then we will have our possessions as a gift from God. Our possessions no longer have us prisoner from the life of the spirit.(Luke 12:16-21 NRSV) Then he told them a parable: "The land of a rich man produced abundantly. {17} And he thought to himself, 'What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?' {18} Then he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. {19} And I will say to my soul, 'Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.' {20} But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' {21} So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich toward God."
Likewise, I say unto you,
there is joy in the presence
of the angels of God
over one sinner that repenteth.

(Luke15:10)

What Jesus said to Nicodemus
The context in which Jesus makes these comments is important.
(John 3: 3)  "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again."
Jesus was practising the same baptism as John the Baptist (Christan baptism was instituted three years later. (John 3:22-23).    (After this , Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside where he spent some times with them, and baptized.)
The historical context assists us to a correct understanding: being ‘born of the Spirit’ cannot refer to the Holy Spirit gifts in any sense, as the Holy Spirit was not given in this manner until Pentecost, three years after Jesus said this.
Verily, verily, I say unto you.
He that heareth my word,
and believeth on Him that sent me,
hath everlasting life,
and shall not come unto condemnation,
but is passed from death unto life.(John 5:24)
(John 6:4 )And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh.Jhn 6:5 When Jesus then lifted up [his] eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?
(Commentary on chapter 6)
Jesus - Bread of LifeThen Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty."
John 6:35
"Jesus said to them, 'Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.'" (Jn 6:53-55)

I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me
shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life

(John 8:12)
Jesus - The Good Shepherd"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep."
John 10:11

my sheep hear my voice,
and I know them, and they follow me:
and I give unto them eternal life;
and they shall never perish,
neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all;
and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
I and my Father are one.

(John 10: 27-30)

Let not your heart be troubled:
ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father's house are many mansions;
if it were not so, I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again, and receive you unto myself;
that where I am , there ye may be also.
And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
Thomas saith unto Him, Lord,
we know not whither thou goest;
and how can we know the way?
Jesus saith to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life,
no man cometh unto the Father but by me.
(John 14: 1-6)

JESUS SAID HE IS GOD"I've heard that Jesus never actually claimed He was God."
John 14:7-10 [7] If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." [8] Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." [9] Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, `Show us the Father'? [10] Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.
John 10:30 "I and the Father are one."
John 14:11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
John 10:37-38 [37] Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. [38] But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father."
Matthew 27:43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, `I am the Son of God.'"
John 17:11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are one.
"When Jesus said 'I and the Father are one' didn't He just mean they are of one accord, they are merely like-minded?"
Taken alone, statements such as "I and the Father are one." and "The Father is in me, and I am in the Father." could mean simply that Jesus agrees with Jehovah. But in the overall context of the Bible this cannot be:
John 10:31-33 [31] Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, [32] but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" [33] "We are not stoning you for any of these," replied the Jews, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God."
John 17:5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.
John 17:10 [Speaking to the Father] All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.
Note: Jesus never claimed to be Jehovah. He claimed to be one "person" of the Trinity. (The term "person" refers to human beings and, therefore does not totally accurately describe the nature of these divine "persons." The late Dr. Walter Martin once described "God" as a being with "three centers of consciousness.")
Note: "Son of Man" was a term referring to the expected Messiah.
Mark 14:61b-62 [61b] Again the high priest asked him, "Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?" [62] "I am," said Jesus. "And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."
Luke 22:66-70 [66] At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. [67] "If you are the Christ, " they said, "tell us." Jesus answered, "If I tell you, you will not believe me, [68] and if I asked you, you would not answer. [69] But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." [70] They all asked, "Are you then the Son of God?" He replied, "You are right in saying I am."
"If Jesus claimed He was God, why did He say the Father is greater?"
John 14:28 "You heard me say, `I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
In the original Greek, the word used for "greater" means more blessed, not greater in nature.
It's like saying "The President is greater than the Vice President."
On the word "greater"
Strong's Greek Concordance Number: 3107
Romanized spelling: makarios
Pronounciation: mak-AR-ee-os
Meaning: supremely blest; by extension, fortunate, well off: -- blessed, happy(-ier)
Jesus clearly and repeatedly indicated that He is not the one who "calls the shots":
John 14:31 the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me.
John 7:16 Jesus answered, "My teaching is not my own. It comes from him who sent me."
John 8:42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me."
John 17:3-12 [3] Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. [4] I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. [5] And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. [6] I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. [7] Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. [8] For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. [9] I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. [10] All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. [11] I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are one. [12] While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
I am the vine, ye are the branches.
He that abideth in me, and I in him,
the same bringeth forth much fruit:
for without me you can do nothing.
(John 15: 5)
Jesus prays to  his Father to glority him and to preserve his apostles, to glorify them, and all other believers with him in heaven.Jesus Christ prayed to the Father shortly before His arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane and subsequent crucifixion. He began His prayer by asking, "Father, the hour is come; glorify, thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee" (John 17: 1). In verse 5 He repeated His request for glorification and specified that He desired the glory that He had with the Father before the creation of the world.
"And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was" (John 17:5)
. Trinitarians say that Jesus was speaking as a second divine person here, but if that were so, Jesus would not be coequal with the Father, as they maintain, but inferior. Jesus would be a divine person who was lacking in glory, who needed the Father to give Him glory, and who asked the Father for help. Jesus would not be omnipotent (all powerful), but lesser in glory and power than the Father. In short, Jesus would not possess some of the essential characteristics of deity. Contrary to the rest of Scripture, He would not truly be God.
If we acknowledge that Jesus is God manifested in the flesh as the Bible teaches (Colossians 2:9; I Timothy 3: 16), then we must affirm that as God He always had divine glory, never lost it, and never needed anyone else to give it to Him. What did He mean, then, when He said, "Glorify thou me . . . with the glory which I had with thee before the world was"?
Resurrection The setting and context provide the answer. Jesus was praying in view of His upcoming crucifixion. He had come into the world to offer His life as a sacrifice for the sins of humanity (Matthew 26:28). He knew that the time had come for Him to fulfill this plan. His flesh naturally shrank from the upcoming agony, but He knew that this was the supreme, perfect will of God for Him. As He had said earlier in John 12:27, contemplating His death, "Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour" (NKJV).
The glory to which Jesus referred in John 17:1,5 was the glory that He as a man would receive by submitting to the plan of God through the crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. Immediately after the statement of John 12:27 Jesus prayed, "Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again" (John 12:28). Jesus then explained, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die" (John 12:3233). God glorified Christ by lifting Him up before all the world on the cross.
. The end result of God's plan of salvation is that believers will live with the glorified Christ throughout eternity. They will behold His glory, and will worship Him as the glorified One. They will say, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing" (Revelation 5: 12). With this ultimate objective in mind, Christ prayed, "Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world" (John 17:24).

"I pray not that Thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that Thou shouldest keep them from the evil." --Jesus (John 17:15)
